About Gibsons Family Network

Gibsons Family Network (GFN) is a non-profit group of family members with a vision of helping people with disabilities to find meaningful, integrated employment within our community.

Our mandate is to enable people with developmental disabilities full citizenship in our community.

The philosophy of the Gibsons Family Network is the belief that everyone is born with abilities. This philosophy allows everyone to reach his or her potential and to thrive as a contributing member of society.

GFN began as an association of families living in Gibsons, BC who have a family member or relative with a developmental disability. The group formed in 2004 and incorporated as a non-profit society in March 2006 in order to move forward to meet the need for more services on the Sunshine Coast. And in December of 2008, we received our charitable status.

We network with each other and the community at large regarding relevant and emerging issues related to community inclusion. Bethia.jpgWe welcome Bethia Macey, our Community Inclusion Coordinator. Bethia teaches skill development through participation in community oriented activities. Integration is a major focus of this program which assists individuals with developmental disabilities to develop skills that will enhance their independence and participation in a variety of activities. Bethia works with individuals to assist them in actively participating in community recreation including skating, racquetball, swimming, fitness, walking, hiking and yoga.  She also helps build relationships by providing support to assist individuals to develop friendships with others. She assist individuals to enhance their skills through a variety of community settings: cooking, shopping and literacy. If an individual is looking for employment she will help support potential job placements. Bethia is a mother of four and a volunteer Coach with Special Olympics Sunshine Coast.  She is an avid hockey player.

We value new ideas and innovation and we constantly seek to improve our knowledge and effectiveness.

GFN promotes public awareness of our issues through special projects and the media. We provide individual and group advocacy for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. We share information and self-help skills with individuals and families. We work to develop partnerships with other community organizations and businesses to promote inclusion and enable people with disabilities to realize their potential.
